This section shows the current update status of your iPod:

Here are a few explanations about what the different update modes mean:

Update Mode Explanation Dangers
Automatic The iPod is automatically detected by iTunes when connected to the computer, and the iPod music is automatically synchronized to be an exact copy of the iTunes library. Once the update has completed the iPod is automatically ejected. If your iTunes library is empty, all the iPod music will automatically be deleted by iTunes.
Selected Playlists The iPod is automatically detected by iTunes when connected to the computer, and the iPod music is automatically synchronized to be an exact copy of the selected playlists in the iTunes library. Once the update has completed the iPod is automatically ejected. If your iTunes library is empty, all the iPod music will automatically be deleted by iTunes.
Manual You manually manage your iPod music library by copying songs from the iTunes library to the iPod. Once you are finished with the update, you need to manually eject the iPod.
In manual mode, you can use the iPod as an external hard drive to carry documents around (Disk use (see below) is always checked).

Settings Explanation
Open iTunes when attached iTunes will automatically open when the iPod is connected.
Disk use Use the iPod as an external hard drive to carry documents with you on-the-go. This setting is always active in manual update mode.
If checked, the iPod needs to be manually ejected before you unplug it to prevent data corruption.
Update checked songs Only updates the songs from the iTunes library that are checked.
This setting is very usefull if your iTunes library is much bigger than your iPod hard drive capacity (eg. 10Gb iTunes library with a 4Gb iPod Nano).
